How does OCR Online turn an image into text?
It uses Tesseract 5, an open-source OCR engine with a neural network that reads text line by line. PDF pages are rendered at 300 dpi first. Searchable PDFs are created with OCRmyPDF, which also straightens skewed and rotated scans.
TXT, DOCX or PDF – which output format should I choose?
TXT for plain text without formatting – the fastest option. DOCX for an editable Word document with paragraphs and tables rebuilt. PDF for a searchable PDF that looks exactly like the original but lets you search and copy the text.
How do I get the most accurate results?
Use a sharp image: scan at 300 dpi, or photograph the page flat, in even light and without shadows. Text of about 10 pt or larger with good contrast is recognized best. Proofread names and numbers before using the text.
Which languages are recognized?
The language of the page you are on, plus English – all 34 languages of this site, including Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. For a document in another language, switch the page language at the bottom first.
Can OCR Online read handwriting?
Only to a limited extent. It is made for printed and typed text such as documents, books, receipts and screenshots; cursive handwriting is not recognized reliably.
My PDF already contains text – does it need OCR?
If you can select text in your PDF viewer, it already has a text layer: pages with text are kept as they are, and for DOCX the text is converted directly. OCR is needed for scanned PDFs and photos.
How many files can I convert at once?
Up to 20 PDFs or images. Each file is converted separately; several results are downloaded together as one ZIP file.
What happens to my files?
Transfers are encrypted (SSL/TLS), processing is automatic, and files are deleted from our servers within two hours. Nobody reviews your documents.
